Here are some common fixes for issues with televisions and screens.
Display Settings
Casting to a Television

Some options to try:

  • If you are connecting to a screen television using a docking station try clicking Windows Key + P.

  • If you are connecting to a screen television wirelessly through your laptop try clicking Windows Key + K

  • Right click on your desktop and select 'Display Settings' then change the drop down to either duplicate or extend your displays

  • When using a laptop, screen and TV go to 'Display Settings' again. Ensure that display 1 (laptop) is showing as 'duplicate desktop on 1 and 3' - this will make sure that your laptop is duplicated on the TV.

Click on Display 2 (screen) and ensure it is showing as 'extend desktop on this display'. You can then use this screen to do other work which students won't be able to see e.g. marking registers.

On the TV RemoteTry television remote try changing the source from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 (or vice versa).

If you are connected to a docking station you can also try reseating the HDMI cable in the docking station.

Remove and reseat the USB-C cable from the docking station to see if it picks up the screen

Making Sure You Are Using the Correct Display Settings

Below is some information on what each of the display settings within the ‘Display Settings’ area of your laptop mean.

  • Duplicate - duplicate whatever is on your main display to all of the other connected displays.

  • Extend - extend the window across all selected monitors allowing you to drag and drop windows to different displays.  

  • Disconnect this display - grey out the display on the display layout and make it a small square.

    • To revert this, select the disconnected display (the small grey box) and change to the required setting

If you are connected to 3 displays there will be an extra option to duplicate between only two monitors and extend to the other monitor.

Audio Issues

  1. Make sure that the volume on your laptop is turned up along with the volume on the TV.

  2. If both volumes are turned up the next step is to check audio output source.

  3. Click the speaker icon on the bottom right hand side of the taskbar.

  1. After that select the speaker options button that is highlighted in the image below.

This will then show the list of available audio outputs. Make sure to select the device you want the audio to play out of.

For most classrooms Samsung will be the output, which is the television.

In other rooms that don't use Samsung TVs check the model of the TV and make sure to select that device in the audio options.

You can also try moving the USB-C cable if you are connected to a docking station to the other USB-C port on your laptop.


Microsoft PowerPoint Issues


If you are having issues with showing PowerPoints on a monitor or TV:

  1. Navigate to the “Slide Show” tab

Connecting to a Monitor with a Docking Station

Sometimes when you connect your laptop to a docking station it will not show a picture on your monitor. If this occurs it might be that the docking station needs restarting.

To do this:

1) Pull the power cable out of the dock

2) Hold down the power button for 10 seconds with power cable unplugged

3) Plug power cable back in

4) Connect the laptop to the docking station again
