is Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-factor authentication uses multiple methods to periodically confirm the user's identify whilst carrying out an activity. So in addition to your password, you will periodically be required to acknowledge a notification or text message on your mobile device.

Simply put it confirms that you know something (your password) and confirms that you have something (your mobile device).

Setup Instructions

Once we have enabled on your account remotely (we don't need to do anything on your PC, laptop, etc) you will need to follow the instructions below (please follow step by step using the screenshots to help you where required):

  • Close down Outlook and then launch Web Email from your desktop

  • The next time you attempt to login to Outlook you will see the following message, click Next

  • Select:
    • Contact Method: Mobile app:
    • Receive notifications for verification
    • Then click Set up at the bottom

  • Work through the step by step instructions that will now be on your PC screen (which look like the next screenshot) to download and configure the “Microsoft Authenticator” app on your mobile phone
    • Basically you search for "Microsoft Authenticator" on your phone
    • Add "Work or School Account"
    • Scan the QR code that is now displayed on your PC screen

  • Once you have carried out the above on your phone you then Click “Next
  • Add your phone number for additional security verification & click Next

  • On the following (final) screen click Done:

Setup Instructions

Please follow the instructions below to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  1. Go to either the Play Store (if you have an Android device) or the App Store (if you have an Apple device) and search for the Microsoft Authenticator app (pictured below).

  1. Go to the following link

  2. Input your Runshaw email (e.g. AAA123456@student.runshaw.ac.uk or ABCD01@runshaw.ac.uk) and password

  3. Press ‘Next’ on the following screen to begin the Multi-Factor Authentication process

    5. If you have completed Step 1 and downloaded the app onto your mobile device then click the ‘Next’ button on the following screen

    6. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and click ‘Next’ on your PC/laptop on the following screen

    7. On your mobile phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app and click the '+' icon at the top of the screen.

What Happens After The Initial Setup

Whilst using Outlook from home (via Outlook web or Runshaw Remote Access), you will need When you use the College systems at home (and occasionally in college) you will be asked to confirm it is you who is signing in to your email when logging in for the first time of a new session. On-site you will only need to occasionally confirm that it is you who is logging inaccount.

When you try to login you will receive a popup on your phone where you will need to click Approve. The popup will look like the following screenshot:
